Do I need to see an emergency dentist?

If you are experiencing a dental problem outside of normal office hours, you’ll need to see an emergency dentist for appropriate care.

We class any dental problem that requires immediate treatment to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth as a dental emergency. We also class swelling affecting the eye or throat as an emergency.

Every case is different, so you must consult a dentist. Most of the time, if you have a dental problem during normal office hours, you should speak with your dental practice first. Based on your symptoms, they will be able to advise you over the phone and, if required, book you in for an emergency or routine appointment.

Outside of normal hours your dental practice may be closed, which means you will have to find another emergency dentist. If you need an emergency dentist in Chertsey or anywhere else, you can use this free NHS tool to find one.

Most dental practices have allowances for emergency appointments. If your practice does not, they may refer you to another practice.

We class the following as high priority dental problems that would require immediate care:
One or more teeth have been knocked out
One or more teeth have been knocked loose
You are in severe pain
You are experiencing significant bleeding that won’t stop
You have swelling that affects the eye
You have swelling that affects the throat

There are also a number of dental problems that may not require immediate treatment but can be cared for by an emergency dentist. These include:

A physically damaged tooth that is cracked or broken
An infection or abscess
Severe toothache
Severe swelling or bleeding of the gums
Damage to dental appliances such as bridges and crowns, where the damage is causing irritation and damage to the mouth

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend seeking immediate treatment from an emergency dentist in Chertsey.
An emergency dentist will prioritise your case and try to find an immediate solution to your problem. This may be a temporary or permanent fix, depending on the issue you have. If it is a temporary fix, such as to control bleeding or alleviate pain, it is likely you will need to book back in with your regular dental practice for a follow up.
Whatever the case, don’t be nervous about your appointment. We are used to seeing patients quickly and provide the very best of care.
