What can be done about missing and broken teeth?
If you have a chipped or broken tooth, you don’t have to live with it. There are a few solutions available to make your tooth look intact again, even when in conversation with someone in front of you. The right solution for your case depends on the tooth (or teeth) in question and the type of damage.
Bonding
If you have chipped off a small piece of tooth enamel, cracked your tooth or broken it, bonding is one possible solution.
Your dentist in Bristol will create a composite material that closely matches the natural colour of your teeth. They will then etch the surface of your broken tooth and glue the composite to it. Next, your dentist will shape the composite to resemble your original tooth. The last step is hardening the composite using UV light. This is called curing. The result will be a repair that appears completely natural.
Crowns
If a large piece of tooth breaks off or your dentist is forced to file the tooth down to rid it of decay, your dentist may recommend a crown.
A crown or dental bridge can be manufactured from porcelain fused to metal, resin, all-metal or ceramic. All have their benefits. In any case, the crown is manufactured to perfectly replicate the original tooth. It is fused over the top of the damaged tooth, so it appears to be completely natural. This procedure is simple, but you may require a root canal surgery if the root is still intact. An endodontist will assist the surgery.
Bridges
If you are missing one or more teeth, your dentist in Bristol may recommend bridges. They replace missing teeth and are a permanent solution.
Bridges are cemented into place onto adjacent teeth - they can replace missing teeth and ‘surround’ damaged teeth. So, for example, if you have two damaged teeth and one missing tooth in a row, bridges can be created to fix the row and bring your smile back. To gain retention (fixability), a post may be placed inside the damaged tooth to create a peg which will act as a seat for the crown.
If you have lost all or nearly all of your teeth, then your dentist in Bristol can recommend dentures. And so as you can see, whether you have four missing molars, one broken in half incisor or are missing all of your teeth, there is always a solution to bring your smile and bite back.
